Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I notice water dripping into my fireplace?
Water entering the firebox or flue is a sign of a potential leak or improper sealing. It may stem from a damaged chimney cap, cracked crown, deteriorated masonry, or loose flashing. A qualified chimney sweep in Portland, OR can inspect the exterior and interior of your chimney, identify the source of the leak, and recommend appropriate repairs—such as installing a new cap or repointing brick—to prevent further damage to your home.
Can a dryer-vent cleaning appointment be combined with a chimney cleaning by a chimney sweep?
Yes. Many homeowners benefit from scheduling both chimney and dryer-vent cleaning at the same time, because both systems involve venting and potential fire risk from buildup. When you hire a chimney sweep in Portland, OR who offers both services, you can often coordinate scheduling, reduce downtime, and save on visits—while addressing lint buildup in the dryer vent and creosote or soot in your chimney.
How do I know if my brick chimney needs masonry repair rather than just a cleaning?
Signs that your masonry requires repair (rather than only cleaning) include visible cracks in bricks or mortar, spalling (flaking) brick faces, mortar joints eroded more than half an inch deep, or a crown that is crumbling. A professional chimney sweep will look for these indications during inspection. If these issues exist, masonry repair is essential to maintain structural integrity and safe venting before continued use of the fireplace or stove.
